Paving Grade Bitumen (IS:73-2006)
Grade VG 30 and VG 40 are commonly used in construction and maintenance of roads, airfields, and allied constructions, as well as in the production of bitumen emulsions.
Bitumen is the final product obtained from the crude oil distillation process. This product, known as straight grade bitumen, shows penetration values of 60–70. The straight grade bitumen is heated and processed in our advanced plant using high-quality machinery to meet the specified performance standards. Viscosity Grade bitumen is designed to withstand:
- Lower temperatures (resistance to cracking)
- Higher temperatures (resistance to rutting)
VG-30 Bitumen
VG-30 is mainly used for constructing extra heavy duty bitumen pavements that must endure substantial traffic loads. It is also suitable in place of 60/70 penetration grades.
VG-40 Bitumen
VG-40 is recommended for highly stressed areas such as Intersections, Near toll booths, and Truck parking areas. It can be used instead of 30/40 penetration grade. Due to its higher viscosity, it provides improved resistance to Shoving, Rutting, and other pavement distresses caused by high temperature and heavy traffic loads.
Benefits of VG Bitumen Over Penetration Grade
- The VG system is based on fundamental engineering parameters (not empirical).
- Viscosity is measured at 60°C and 135°C, which considers low and high temperature susceptibility of the binder (unlike penetration measured at 25°C).
- Same viscosity grade bitumen ensures uniform performance in the field.
- Greater ease of handling for customers, as viscosity value at two different temperatures (60°C and 135°C) is available.
- Minimum specified kinematic viscosity value at 135°C ensures better control of tender mixes during construction.
- Viscosity graded bitumen is suitable for a wide range of temperatures: 25°C (low temperature cracking), 60°C (rutting), and 135°C (construction mixing and compaction).
- IS 73:2006 provides only 7 tests to evaluate a sample compared to 14 tests in the penetration grade system. This reduces time and cost without compromising quality.
Industrial Grade Bitumen (IS:702)
Straight Grade Bitumen is processed in our plant for an extended period. Through this process, bitumen becomes viscous, moisture-free, and softer. Penetration values are changed to meet required specifications. This is called Blown Bitumen.
Blown bitumen has a wide range of industrial applications. Grades are differentiated based on their Softening points and Penetration values.
Applications
- Waterproofing & Damp proofing
- Acid/alkali resistant surfaces
- Flooring & Canal lining
- Road construction & Joint fillers
- Insulation & Battery sealing
- Cable jointing compounds
- Paint manufacturing & Printing inks
- Explosives and related industries
Bitumen Emulsion
Bitumen Emulsion is available in Anionic, Cationic, and Nonionic types. The selection depends on aggregate type and climate conditions.
Cationic emulsions represent nearly 80–95% of total consumption today. Advances in emulsion chemistry and equipment have made them the most widely used class, especially in tropical regions and countries with extreme climatic conditions. The performance depends on the coalescence of bitumen droplets when they contact aggregate or road surfaces.
Road Construction Applications (IS 8887:2004)
Bitumen is extensively used in road construction. Emulsions are dispersions of bitumen in water stabilized using an emulsifier. Unlike hot bitumen, emulsified bitumen requires no heating, is easy to handle, and offers improved versatility.
| Grade | Type | Recommended Application |
